Tibetan Buddhism Documentary Video

Tibet’s Lost Paradise: Shangri-La

(A&E History Channel Production)<= /b>

Gain information and insight on this unusual and exotic form of Buddh= ism by viewing this video about the Tibetan Buddhist idea of Shambala, the magi= cal land of perfect harmony, which was termed Shangri-La by 20th cen= tury westerners.

For example, this video reports that holders of the office of Dalai L= ama, including the current Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama) are considered by Tibetan Buddhists to be a deity, a reincarnated Buddha.  It has been said that= sects of Tibetan Buddhism are the only form of Buddhism to believe in such Living Buddhas.

The video also reports and depicts the following process by which the current 14th Dalai Lama was selected:  Following the death= of the 13th Dalai Lama in 1933, a delegation of Tibetan Buddhist mo= nks searched throughout the Tibetan plateau for the reincarnated “soul boy” of the 13th Dalai Lama.  After several years of searching, = such delegation of monks determined they found such “soul boy” in China’s Qinghai Province (which borders China’s Autonomous Regi= on of Tibet) as a 2 year old son of a peasant family.  In 1939, such “soul boy̶= 1; was brought to the city of Lhasa (with an armed guard provided for by ChinaR= 17;s Nationalist government), and in 1940 was officially installed in the office= of Dalai Lama, following approval of his installation by the Chinese government.  The position of D= alai Lama (as a reincarnated Buddha) was originated in Tibetan Buddhism around 1= 600 A.D. (about 2000 years after the death of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni = in India) and around the beginning of the Qing (Manchu) Dynasty in China (1644-1911).

Since historically the office of Dalai La= ma is considered to have combined political, with religious, leadership in Tib= et, the government presided over by the Dalai Lama has been called a theocracy (rule by a god), and it has been considered the only theocracy in the modern world.  The office of Dalai La= ma is said to have assumed political authority in Tibet starting around the begin= ning of the Qing Dynasty, and leading historians seem to agree that the office of Dalai Lama and its power depended early, principally and continually on the support and patronage of the Qing Emperors, who again incorporated Tibet wi= thin their Chinese Empire.

***Th= e USCPFA Traveling Folk Art Exhibit is shown at Indian Prairie Library in Octobe= r, 2008 and is available upon request for other libraries and venues in 2008 a= nd 2009.  <= /span>Indian Prairie Library serves the western suburbs of Willowbrook, Darien & Burr Ridge.  Please consider visiti= ng if you live in that vicinity (www.indianprairielibrary.org, 401 Plainfield Road, Darien, IL 60561-4207).  Thanks to Chapter member Kurt L= arsen for contacting Indian Prairie Library to host this traveling exhibit.  Please let me know if = you wish to contact a local Chicagoland library, art center or other venue to s= how our exhibit.  The exhibit shows the= work of masters of Kite art & craft, dough figurine sculpture, paper-cutting art, and snuff bottle painting (painting from inside the bottle) from Beiji= ng, China.  It is accompanied by u= p to 20 photos of scenic locations in China by a leading Beijing photographer.  Twelve large posters (2’x3&#= 8217;) of contemporary art from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, one of the 3= top art schools in China, are also available for showing.

          Those who vis= ited the permanent Tibet Exhibit at the Field Museum on Sept. 21 were rewarded with helpful information and insights on Tibet that is difficult to obtain elsewhere.  While it is smaller than I anticipated, I personally spent 2 hours studying the exhibit, and felt the time was well worth it.

The regular monthly Chapter meeting typically includes a delicious traditional Chinese multi-course meal, which begins at 2 pm; the hour long luncheon talk (with Q&A) begins at 3 pm; = and all this is only $20.&= nbsp;               &= nbsp;   CfaDE101908EmaFINAL
